Himachal Skiing
The picturesque hills of Himachal are snow laden in
the winter. These beautiful, white snow-covered slopes lure a skier to a
great skiing excitement. Himachal offer adventures while skiing - one can
enjoy from elementary skiing to the slalom.
Himachal Pradesh lies among the Himalayan ranges of Dhauladhar, the Great
Himalayas, Shiwalik and Pir Panjal, of the western Himalaya, where most of
its higher reaches remain under snow for a long time. Thus one can undertake
the ski tour at any time to any height.
The mountaineering Institute at Manali organizes ski courses from January
onwards at Narkanda. Narkanda is 2,700 meters above sea level, and is almost
a paradise for skiers for about three months in a year during the winter
season. Winter and summer skiing is possible in Manali's Solang area.
The other most common ski location are Kufri, and Manali. Kufri is oldest
place in India that is associated with skiing, and is still a skiing
location. It was in 1930, when British Army officers explored the Kufri
slopes about 12-km from Shimla on the Hindustan Tibet road. Manali also
offers both summer and winter skiing. A winter carnival at Manali is
organized every year from 10th to 13th February. Besides the cultural
programs in the carnival the most important part of the carnival is the ski
competition held at the Solang Nallah, 10-km from Manali.
Besides Kufri, Manali and Narkanda there are various other locations where
you can enjoy skiing. These locations include the slopes of Kullu, Lahaul
and Spiti, Kinnaur and Shimla.
